Sheffield Wednesday are in a rut, with manager Xisco Munoz seemingly coming under increasing pressure.
The Spaniard took charge in the summer but is yet to pick up a win in the Championship.
Saturday’s defeat at Swansea City leaves the Owls in last place of the table, with the club the only one in the Championship yet to claim a win in the league this season.
Munoz has been dealt a tough hand. But the former Watford boss is coming under criticism for his team selection and tactics, leading many to think that a managerial change is in the offing.
There’s several options out there, though expect Wednesday to be limited to those out-of-work. And of the managers not in a job right now, the best potential option might be former boss Steve Bruce.
Bruce back at Hillsborough?
Owner Dejphon Chansiri has faced criticism for a long time now. And his online feud with Darren Moore may well have put a lot of managers off of working with the Owls owner.
But Bruce may well be a manager with fairly bad pedigree after two poor jobs at Newcastle United and West Brom. But he did a very good job with Wednesday before leaving for St James’ Park in 2019; with the Owls, Bruce oversaw 18 total games, winning seven and losing just three.
There might be a bit of love for Bruce to regain at Wednesday, and potentially from Chansiri. But Bruce’s results at Hillsborough speak for themselves, and with the 62-year-old having worked with the club before, he already knows what to expect from the job.
His experience speaks for itself. His style of play was never that attractive but right now, Wednesday don’t need a style of play; they need results and a manager with proper experience of the Football League.
Bruce might yet be the only man who could save Sheffield Wednesday this season.
