Five free-agents who Sheffield Wednesday can still sign after quiet transfer deadline day

Sheffield Wednesday endured a very quiet transfer deadline day last week.

The Owls did a majority of their business at the start of the summer, so it was expected that things would quieten down towards the end.

However, after bringing in Shea Charles on loan, it was believed that Sheffield Wednesday still wanted to sign another centre-back and attacker.

With the likes of Michael Smith and Callum Paterson remaining beyond the deadline, Wednesday opted against bringing in any further signings.

That was then followed up with a 3-0 hammering by Millwall, and some fans are now a little concerned that the Yorkshire outfit should have actually pressed ahead with further additions.

Thankfully, their search for new players isn’t necessarily completely over.

Despite the transfer window closing, there are a still a number of players available on a free transfer, if that is what Danny Rohl wanted to do.

Here are some of the best options for Rohl to consider in the free-agent market.

Five free-agents Sheffield Wednesday could sign

Liam Cooper

After making almost 300 appearances for Leeds United, Cooper was released at the end of last season.

The defender came close to joining Hull City and is also believed to be a target for Derby County, but currently remains without a club.

Cooper has bags of experience in the EFL and has two league titles to his name, as well as being named in the Championship Team of the Year twice.

The 33-year-old could add some leadership and real quality to Wednesday’s backline.

Paul Dummett

Dummett has spent most of his career in the Premier League, but did make 45 appearances when Newcastle were promoted from the Championship in the 2016-17 season.

The 32-year-old has only managed eight league appearances in the last two seasons though and is now on the search for a new club.

Dummett is able to play as both a left-back and a centre-back, so could add some versatility to the squad.

It seems unlikely that he would be a starter for the Owls though, so Rohl may not be interested.

Jack Cork

Cork spent the last seven years at Burnley and was their captain when they were promoted back to the Premier League last year.

The midfielder has over 300 Premier League appearances and over 200 Championship appearances to his name.

While he has recently turned 35 years old, the veteran could add some much needed leadership in the No.6 position at Hillsborough.

Jake Livermore

Livermore is another player with bags of appearances in both the Premier League and Championship.

The 34-year-old has won promotion twice and also reached the FA Cup semi-final with Hull City in 2014.

Livermore made 30 appearances in the second division last term and could be another player able to firm up the Owls’ midfield.

Aaron Connolly

Connolly scored eight goals for Hull last season before he was released.

The ‘scary’ striker has showed a lot of promise in the past, but still finds himself without a club.

There appeared to be very little competition for his signature over the summer either, but could act as a quality back-up for Ike Ugbo if Rohl was to keep Jamal Lowe out of the no.9 position.
