‘Expensive mistake’: Some Owls fans react as Joost van Aken says he’s leaving Wednesday in the summer

Some Sheffield Wednesday supporters have reacted on the unofficial club’s forum Owlstalk to talk defender Joost van Aken is leaving the club this coming summer.

The Dutch defender joined the Owls in 2017 and was signed by Carlos Carvalhal.

But three years later, van Aken’s contract at Hillsborough has entered the final six months and he seemingly has his heart set on a move away from the club this summer.

Speaking to Dutch site Feanonline.nl, van Aken says he would like to try his hand at a league such as Spain, Italy or Switzerland before later returning to the Netherlands.

“If I go back to the Netherlands, I will probably not come to the Netherlands again. When I do that, it will be real to enjoy the game again and be closer to family. As a person, I would still like to be able to live and play football in another European country for a few years. Italy, Switzerland, Spain … I think that would be nice. My contract will expire next summer and after that I hope to embark on a nice adventure somewhere for a number of years. After that it might be time for a return to the Netherlands,” van Aken explained.

The versatile defender can operate in the middle or at left-back.

Van Aken has made 16 Championship starts this season. However, his progress of late has been hampered with injuries with his last appearance coming on Boxing Day.

At 26, he still has plenty of years ahead of him, but he hasn’t had the best of times at Hillsborough, spending a season out on loan in the German Bundesliga II.

Wednesday supporters will feel somewhat underwhelmed by his spell considering what was paid, but criticism on that part should be directed towards the recruitment team.

Here is how some Wednesday fans reacted to his comments.

“I wish him all the best – he wasn’t very good, but it’s certainly not his fault that we hopelessly overpaid for him” – Kew Owl

“I actually think there’s a player in there somewhere, but he’s lacking some key physical attributes to make him a decent player. He’s never looked comfortable playing for us though, so it’s best he ships out.” – 0742

“Another very expensive mistake” – Django

“Fair play, he’s had a go this season…but still isn’t good enough”- willyfox

“Sure I read somewhere we paid £2.5M , rising to £4M with add ons which presumably havent been triggered. Either way it was far too much , and a shocking example of our “recruitment.” – sheriwozgod

“Wont be missed, yet another overpriced import who has been poor value.” – Zicosterland2

“He’s been a 6/10 this season, compared to a 5/10 in his previous spell. Not good enough sadly. Lees, Hutch, Dunkley, Iorfa, Borner much better Championship CBs.” – Holmowl
