Sheffield Wednesday suffered yet another loss on a Saturday, but one man who shone off the bench was Ashley Fletcher.
Wednesday suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Bristol City at Ashton Gate, with Barry Bannan’s sending off midway through the first half proving pivotal, with the scores level at the time.
It became the tenth game from Wednesday’s 15 in the Championship so far this season that they have failed to score in, with it being a recurring problem for the Owls.
One man who could potentially solve those problems is Ashley Fletcher.
Fletcher praised for ‘biggest impression’
Fletcher has made eleven appearances so far this season for Wednesday since joining on loan from Watford in the summer, but has only started two of those.
He was not given that much of a chance under former manager Xisco Munoz, but was included in the squad for the first time under new manager Danny Rohl on Saturday afternoon, coming off the bench in the 83rd minute.
Journalist Ricky Charlesworth praised Fletcher for his ‘biggest impression to date’ on Saturday, saying:
‘Initially under Rohl it looked like he would struggle to get back in but after missing out on the German’s first three games, but he came on at Bristol City and made his biggest impression to date – albeit in just an eight-minute cameo.”
28-year-old could solve Owls’ attacking problems
Fletcher has previously shown his capabilities at Championship level, but not since the 19/20 season when he scored eleven goals whilst at Middlesbrough.
Last season, whilst on loan at Wigan, he only scored two goals in 28 appearances as they were relegated.
Whilst he has had a tough time of it in the last few seasons, Fletcher showed on Saturday his hunger and desire for Wednesday, and maybe he could be the one to end the Owls’ goal-scoring problems.
