There’s reported interest in one Sheffield Wednesday man ahead of the summer.
The summer transfer window officially opens for business on June 14th, and it looks like Sheffield Wednesday may have one or two deals lined up for its opening.
Danny Rohl and co are quickly putting together a list of names who could arrive at Hillsborough this summer, but there’s also several leaving.
Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer have extended their stays but there’s still uncertainty over the likes of Josh Windass, Will Vaulks, Di’Shon Bernard and more.
Then there’s players under contract but who may well be on the move this summer; Bailey Cadamarteri could well be loaned out if there’s attackers brought in, whilst fringe names could be offloaded permanently.
Rohl will be desperate to clear the decks and bring in more youthful players, and players more in line with his philosophy.
There’s now one name reportedly of interest to other clubs; Mallik Wilks.
Transfer interest in Sheffield Wednesday man Mallik Wilks
Reports claim that Wilks, 25, is wanted by a number of English Football League clubs, including Charlton Athletic, Reading, and Stockport County.
The striker joined Sheffield Wednesday from Hull City in August 2022. It was a deal that the Owls and Darren Moore had wanted for a while, but it’s not yet panned out.
He remains under contract going into the next season, but under Rohl he failed to impress; Wilks featured just 15 times in the 2023/24 Championship campaign, failing to register a goal or assist.
Now with interest emerging, it could be the optimal time for Sheffield Wednesday to part ways with the Englishman, and for Wilks to embark on a new challenge.
What next for Mallik Wilks after Sheffield Wednesday struggles
Wilks has certainly shown glimpses of a good player; in the 2022/23 campaign he registered five assists and one goal in 16 League One outings.
And with Hull City before, he netted 19 and assisted eight more as the Tigers went on to win the League One title in 2021, so it seems like League One might be his level.
But expect Rohl to have bigger transfer priorities on his mind right now; the main aim at the moment will be to bolster the side and fill in the gaps, rather than stretch it even more.
That said, if a suitable offer for Wilks arrives soon, expect Sheffield Wednesday to seriously consider it.
Wilks clearly isn’t that favoured by Rohl and with a horde of new players set to arrive this summer, it could force Wilks even further out of the Wednesday picture.
