The club is staring at relegation to League One; amid a wave of off-field uncertainty and with a number of long-standing first-team players out of contract next summer.
Danny Rohl could be left with the barebones of a team next summer and if owner Dejphon Chansiri doesn’t put a decent enough squad together, then whatever division the club is in, a rapid decline could be on the cards.
Youngster Bailey Cadamarteri has won over the hearts of fans after scoring the opener in the win over Blackburn Rovers, and it’s reported that the club are now in talks over a new deal for the 18-year-old.
With that in mind, here are three other Sheffield Wednesday players who deserve new deals…
Will Vaulks
The Welshman has come back into the XI in recent weeks and after strong performances against Leicester City and Blackburn, it’s hard to imagine an Owls starting line up without the 30-year-old in it.
He’s one of the many out of contract next summer and after his ‘influential’ performance vs Blackburn, the Owls hierarchy will surely be considering a new deal for Vaulks.
His work-rate and overall dominance in the middle of the pitch really compliments the more intense and pressing style of play that Rohl dons, so the German will surely be eager for Vaulks to commit his future to the club as well.
Barry Bannan
The legendary Owls captain is another out of contract next summer.
He’s not had his best season so far with just one goal and no assists in 15 Championship outings, but despite being 34, he’s still showing that he can compete at Championship level.
And Bannan has been in fine form of late with his skillful passing game really helping Sheffield Wednesday tick under Rohl, who’s often spoken fondly of the Scot.
Sheffield Wednesday fans would surely love to see another year or two of Bannan, so a new deal seems like a no-brainer.
Di’Shon Bernard
There were some poor signings from Sheffield Wednesday in the last summer transfer window, but Bernard isn’t one of them.
He’s arguably proving to be the Owls’ best signing of the season so far with his performance vs Blackburn Rovers summing up what he brings to the team.
The Jamaican international is a well-rounded defender able to win battles in the air and on the ground, and at 23 years old he’s someone who Rohl and co could look to build a longer-term team around.
He signed a one-year deal in the summer but Sheffield Wednesday will surely now be considering a longer-term deal for the centre-back.
