Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has explained why Callum Paterson was omitted from his matchday squad yesterday. The Owls beat Stoke 1-0 at the Bet365 Stadium to move off the bottom of the Championship.

Wednesday announced their team an hour before kick-off yesterday and Paterson wasn’t included. The Scottish star wasn’t even on the bench and naturally that raised some questions.

The Owls player is an important member of the squad under Rohl. His versatility has proved vital in certain moments and the manager will hope to have him back soon.

Paterson omission explained by Rohl

The Owls boss was quizzed on Paterson shortly after this latest win for Wednesday. He’s explained that it’s nothing too serious and it’s a case of managing things for now.

He told The Star: “Callum Paterson was just ill, but I think he will be available on Wednesday. It is what it is, and it’s why we have a big squad at the moment – we need everybody, and this is good. Hopefully tomorrow he is back, or Monday, and then we can go forward.”

Paterson has been included 17 times in the Wednesday team this season, registering two assists in all competitions.

Paterson remains important to Wednesday

At 29-years-old, Paterson is at a decent age and his value to the Wednesday team shouldn’t be underestimated. His versatility is a brilliant feather in his cap and he’s great to have in the squad.

Wednesday face Norwich City on Wednesday night and they will view that as a big chance to get some more points on the board.

Hopefully, Paterson can be available to make that trip. He’s made 145 appearances for the Owls in total and he was an important player during last season’s push towards promotion.

Wednesday have finally hit a bit of form with seven points collected from their last three games. Paterson returning can only bolster the team’s chances further and it will be great to have him back available.
