A journalist has explained the ‘one reason’ that Danny Rohl likes Sheffield Wednesday’s Liam Palmer so much.
Liam Palmer has spent the last 25 years at Sheffield Wednesday and has been a regular in the senior team for most of his career, however his time at the club looked like it may have been coming to an end under Danny Rohl.
Following the German’s arrival in October, Liam Palmer failed to feature in the next seven games in the Championship. However, he has now played the full 90 minutes in five of the last seven games.
The defender has become a vital asset to Rohl in recent weeks, playing a key role in the three clean sheets they have picked up over the last month.
The 34-year-old has clearly grown very fond of Palmer, and journalist Joe Crann has now explained why he thinks he likes him so much.
He wrote on X: “A word on Liam Palmer – who I thought was excellent again for #SWFC yesterday… I think one reason Danny Röhl likes him so much is that he can effectively change setup two or three times without changing personnel at all while Palmer is on the pitch. Has genuine versatility.”
How versatile is Liam Palmer?
Liam Palmer has played in six different positions during his time at Sheffield Wednesday.
The veteran is primarily a right-back and has played their 203 times, while he has also played across the backline, at centre-back (65) and left-back (29).
Palmer has even ventured further up field, playing as a wide midfielder on a whopping 67 occasions. He has played in central midfield 20 times, while he has played as a defensive midfielder 39 times – a position he has regularly adopted under Rohl.
Palmer puts on a solid performance wherever he plays and he is very happy to do so if it helps the team out. It is a trait that has allowed him to consistently be named in the starting line-up recently and one that could potentially urge Rohl to offer him a new contract this summer.
For now though, Palmer will be eager to continue playing his part in their resurgence, which currently sees him play as part of a three-man central defence. It is a backline that has stayed the same for the past few weeks (bar Di’Shon Bernard’s suspension) and one that seems to be Rohl’s favourite, after months of having to chop and change.
