Sheffield Wednesday are struggling this season but the promotion from League One proved a day to remember. Now, it’s been explained what happened in the dressing room after the 1-0 win over Barnsley.
Alex Miller and Joe Crann are two respected journalists who cover the fortunes of Sheffield Wednesday for The Star. They’ve now written a book called ‘Is There Time For a Winner?’ and a snippet has been transcribed.
It details what Darren Moore, Barry Bannan and other Sheffield Wednesday starts did after the famous win. Josh Windass scored the winning goal in the first minute of stoppage time at the end of extra-time.
What Sheffield Wednesday stars did after promotion
It was a truly remarkable day for the Owls at Wembley. The only time Wednesday were in front during the entire play-off campaign was when Windass struck in added time.
After the game, the 44,000 Wednesdayites packed into Wembley rejoiced. The after-party would have proved a joy to behold and now some material from the book has been released.
Yorkshire Live have published the snippet and the ‘Is There Time For a Winner?’ book claims: “Moore returned to the changing room to a hero’s welcome, doused in lager and immediately swept up in the joy of the occasions, joining in with a riotous rendition of: “We are going up.”
The publication continues: “Music continued to blare through the changing room as Will Vaulks flipped and wriggled his way through the full rendition of his considerable dancefloor repertoire; worms, Russian squat dances and all. He came to life as Robbie Williams hit the playlist while players and backroom staff leant from side to side, arm in arm, throughout Angels – which had become something of an anthem in the changing room after the Scouser’s numerous renditions throughout the campaign.
“Having posed for photos in homage to the image of Lee Bullen celebrating Wednesday’s last play-off win 18 years earlier, Barry Bannan jumped fully clothed – bucket hat, boots and all – into an ice bath, losing his footing and briefly submerging himself.”
Wednesday will hope good times can return under Danny Rohl
There are some seriously good characters in the dressing room at Hillsborough. After 12 games since promotion, Wednesday haven’t won any of them but there was an improvement on Saturday.
It was the first time that Danny Rohl had taken charge of the team. Wednesday were definitely unfortunate not to score during the contest and perhaps should have had a penalty.
One thing that Wednesday won’t ever do is roll over and have their tummies tickled. The memory of that day at Wembley is still fresh in the supporters’ minds and they won’t want the team to go straight back down.
Many of the promotion winners are still in place at S6. As a result, Rohl can perhaps tap into the team spirit that was evident last season and utilise many of those players in the coming weeks.
