Achraf Lazaar has emerged as a summer transfer target for Sheffield Wednesday.

As reported by Tuttomercatoweb, Sheffield Wednesday and Portuguese outfit Boavista are both interested in signing Achraf Lazar, who is currently a free agent.

Sheffield Wednesday desperately need to add to their squad this summer. It has been a very slow start to the transfer window for the Owls, which has already tested the patience of new boss, Xisco Munoz.

Having secured their promotion from League One last season via the play-offs, it is clear that the club need to bring in additional quality if they’re to survive and thrive back in the Championship. There is plenty of work for Munoz to do this summer, as as things stand, he has a very limited first team playing squad to call upon at Hillsborough. The return of Lazaar would at least add some much needed defensive depth.

Should Sheffield Wednesday bring back Achraf Lazaar?

Lazaar has experienced life at Sheffield Wednesday before. The full-back spent a brief spell on loan with the Owls in the second half of the 2018/19 season. However, the 31-year-old managed just four Championship appearances for the club in that time.

Lazaar’s parent club at the time was Newcastle United, and he later joined Watford on a permanent basis. However, Lazaar failed to establish himself as a first-team regular for either club. The 19-cap Morocco international most recently featured for Serie C outfit Novara.

Whilst Munoz needs new options to call upon, it’s hard to see what Lazaar would add to the squad. He would be cheap and is clearly available, and is already familiar with the squad, but there must be big question marks over his ability. Lazaar seems unlikely to be able to help the Owls to achieve their aims on the pitch this season.

Wednesday need to be smart in the market. Bringing Lazaar back to Yorkshire doesn’t seem like the wisest move.
