Speaking in his pre-match press conference, interim Sheffield Wednesday manager Neil Thompson has addressed rumours linking the Owls with a move for Achraf Lazaar after his Newcastle contract was terminated this week.
Lazaar of course spent the second half of the 2018/19 season on loan at Hillsborough making four appearances in the league for the club.
His loan spell wasn’t all that successful, as shown by his lack of minutes, but there has still been plenty of speculation about his return to the club, and understandably, Thompson was asked about it in Friday’s press conference.
“It’s not something that we have discussed but, obviously, when people come available we will take note and act accordingly,” Thompson said.
The manager was then asked if there had been any contact with Lazaar, to which he replied: “Not that I’m aware of.”
The Owls haven’t discussed the prospect of bringing Lazaar back yet, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a move is off the cards.
It’s been reported that Wednesday enquired about him in January, so he’s clearly a player that is on their radar, and now that he’s available on a free, it’s a move that would make a lot of sense.
However, because he wasn’t released during the January window, Wednesday wouldn’t be able to sign him until the summer in any case, so this is one to keep an eye on in the coming months rather than in the immediate future.
