Two clubs reportedly pursuing Sheffield Wednesday's Joost van Aken ahead of January deadline

Joost van Aken could still leave Sheffield Wednesday this month, according to reports in the centre-back’s native Netherlands.

Van Aken was said to be interesting PEC Zwolle earlier in the window, but the Dutch side’s subsequent capture of Yuta Nakayama appeared to cast doubt on the Owls man’s chances of a move.

Voetbal International claims, however, that Zwolle are still seeking defensive reinforcements and see Van Aken as an ‘important candidate’.

The 24-year-old – who it is claimed could cost Sheffield Wednesday an eventual fee of around £4 million following his 2017 transfer from Heerenveen – has only played twice for the Owls this season, and is currently behind Tom Lees, Michael Hector and Jordan Thorniley in the pecking order at Hillsborough.

But if Zwolle is not to be Van Aken’s next destination then NAC Breda might be, with VI adding that he is also ‘on the list’ of Mitchell van der Gaag’s side.

Zwolle recently appointed Jaap Stam – who played in Van Aken’s position for various top clubs including Manchester United – as manager, while the former Sheffield Wednesday centre-back, Darryl Lachman, is also on the Bluefingers’ books.
