Sheffield Wednesday skipper Barry Bannan is out of contract at the end of the season, and he says that a new deal isn’t his priority at the moment.
Instead, the long-serving Sheffield Wednesday favourite is determined to turn things around this season.
His side sit in last place of the Championship table but have just appointed a new boss in Danny Rohl, who takes charge of his first game away at Watford this weekend.
Bannan will no doubt play a huge role this season for Wednesday. But what role he plays for the club beyond this season remains to be seen.
The 33-year-old is out of contract in the summer and he’s revealed to The Star that there’s no clause or trigger in his deal depending on how many appearances he makes.
He said:
“My contract runs out at the end of the season no matter how many games I play or don’t play. That’s the least of my worries, I’m concentrating on trying to perform and trying to win games for the club.”
Bannan though hinted that he’s already decided he’ll stay beyond this season, adding:
“That’ll all take care of itself, whether I get another year or whether I have to take lower. That’ll be decided by manager and chairman.
“It’s just not my priority at the moment. My priority is to try to perform better individually and win games.”
Another year for Bannan at Sheffield Wednesday?
Bannan’s comments seem to suggest that he’s stating at Hillsborough either way; whether that’s another year on the same deal or even a pay-cut.
And it goes to show the dedication and loyalty he has to the club. He’s a huge favourite after all these years and he’s still a player with undoubted talent, so Rohl will certainly be looking to Bannan to help turn the tide this season.
Sheffield Wednesday are back in Championship action this weekend, with a trip to fellow strugglers Watford on the cards for Rohl’s opening game in charge.
