Sheffield Wednesday have endured a rotten start to the 2023/24 campaign and things have to change. Danny Rohl will hope to get plenty of work done on the training pitch before the Owls face Birmingham after the international break.
Rohl replaced Xisco Munoz who was sacked after a matter of months in the hot seat. The German boss has overseen the team’s first win of the campaign since he came in, although they’ve lost four games under his stewardship as well.
With the international break upon us, we’ve looked at Wednesday’s five best players during the 2023/24 campaign based on the average ratings given to players by Who Scored.
5) Dominic Iorfa – 6.51
The ‘Fastest Man in Yorkshire’ as Wednesday fans call him has been in fine form during the 2023/24 campaign. He’s very much a player who can operate in the Championship and there will be more to come from him this season.
Iorfa has made 11 appearances this season and is very much an important part of Rohl’s plans. The 28-year-old can operate in a number of defensive positions and that level of versatility will be useful as the season progresses.
4) Callum Paterson – 6.53
The Scotland player is very much a utility man at Wednesday. He’s been a regular in the team this season too and he’s picked up where he left off at the end of last season.
Paterson has picked up five yellow cards this season and will miss the trip to Birmingham after the break. At 29, the player is in his prime and his versatility will be helpful this season.
3) Barry Bannan – 6.59
The captain was always going to be an important player this season and he’s made 12 appearances in the heart of the Wednesday midfield during the campaign.
Bannan was recently sent off at Bristol City but the red card was later rescinded. Ultimately that decision cost the Owls as they were well on top during the game at Ashton Gate when it was 11 v 11.
2) Akin Famewo – 6.59
Perhaps one of the surprise packages of the season has been Famewo. He’s been played far more often than anyone perhaps imagined and has largely been used as a left-sided option.
Famewo can play anywhere across the defensive unit. He’s made 11 appearances and will now hope to maintain a place in the team under Rohl.
1) Di’Shon Bernard – 6.66
The club’s Player of the Year so far by some distance is Wednesday newbie Bernard. He’s currently away with Jamaica and he looks very much like a top player that the club have added.
Bernard signed on a free transfer having left Manchester United. He looks like a quality addition to the ranks and hopefully, he can get even better under Rohl.
