Summer Wednesday target excelling since move elsewhere; new club up to 6th after 4 wins in 5

The summer Sheffield Wednesday target Frederico Venancio is having an extremely positive impact at his new loan club.

Wednesday were linked with a move for Venancio, who spent the 2017/18 season at Hillsborough, throughout the transfer window.

But the Owls instead signed Chey Dunkley and Aden Flint, while also reintegrating the exiled Joost van Aken into their squad.

By the time Flint arrived at Wednesday, Venancio had already joined the Spanish second-tier side CD Lugo on loan from Vitoria Guimaraes.

And the 27-year-old is unbeaten in five so far, of which he has won four and kept three clean sheets.

Prior to Venancio’s debut, Lugo had won just one league game and lost the other four, but now sit sixth in the standings.

Whether or not the Portuguese would have had a similar impact at Hillsborough remains to be seen.

But it should be said that Wednesday’s problems appear to stem further beyond their porous back-line.

Venancio is due to spend the rest of the season in Spain’s north-west, by which point he will have a year left on his Vitoria contract.
