Steve Bruce has revealed he will meet with Dejphon Chansiri in the next few weeks to discuss potential new contracts for Keiren Westwood and some of Sheffield Wednesday’s other soon-to-be free agents.
Westwood is one of nine Owls players whose deals expire at the end of this season.
But only three of those – the Irishman, Liam Palmer and George Boyd – have featured regularly under Bruce and the Wednesday manager’s assistants, Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence.
Asked whether the decision to offer Westwood would be an “easy one”, Bruce told BBC Radio Sheffield:
Yeah, well, I mean, look, that’s something. We’ll sit down with the chairman [Chansiri] over the next few weeks. I said from day one that everybody would get their chance. Of course, Westy’s come back into the team from not being in it. Of course, we’ll look at it, just like everybody else who’s out of contract.
This is Westwood’s fifth season at Sheffield Wednesday, during which time he has been voted the fans’ player of the year on two occasions.
Asked last week if he would want to commit to the Owls beyond his current contract, the 34-year-old told the same radio station:
Of course, who wouldn’t? It’s a fantastic football club. I’ve been here five years. I have a really good relationship with everyone at the club. I don’t see why I would like that to change.
