John Harkes’ son, Ian, could be set to follow in his father’s footsteps.
As a 23-year-old, Harkes Snr found himself plucked from American soccer by Sheffield Wednesday, and spent six successive seasons on this side of the Atlantic, also playing for Derby County and West Ham United before returning home in 1996.
Now the same age his old man was at the start of his British adventure, Harkes Jnr has reportedly agreed a two-year deal to join Dundee United.
It is claimed by Scott Burns, a reporter at the Scottish Daily Express, that the out-of-contract DC United midfielder flew into Scotland ahead of the Terrors’ game against Dunfermline on Saturday to undergo a medical.
Dundee United are yet to formally announce Harkes Jnr’s arrival. But should the deal go through, it will see the Harkes family come full-circle, with John’s parents having emigrated from Scotland prior to his birth, in Kearny, New Jersey.
Harkes Snr helped Sheffield Wednesday to League Cup success alongside promotion from the old second division in the 1990-91 season, and was part of the Owls side beaten by Arsenal in the final of both domestic cups two years later.
