Sheffield Wednesday's Sam Winnall won't rule out January transfer, but loan move 'out of the question'

Sam Winnall insists that he will not leave Sheffield Wednesday on loan in January.

Winnall, who made his first start since October 1 against Cardiff City on Sunday, is one of several Wednesday players out of contract next summer.

And it has been speculated that the striker could be among those heading out of Hillsborough in January.

But when asked if he’s considered a loan move, Winnall told BBC Radio Sheffield: “Well, I’ve got six months left on my contract so a loan move’s irrelevant, isn’t it? So that’s out of the question.

“I don’t know. Whatever happens in January, happens. I’m just trying to focus every day and every game on Sheffield Wednesday and just whatever will be, will be.”

On whether or not contract talks have taken place between Sheffield Wednesday and Winnall, the 28-year-old replied: “No, not yet. No. Like I say, I think that’s still too far into the future to even think about yet.”

Sheffield Wednesday have been linked to a string of strikers ahead of the winter window, notably Rhian Brewster, Lyle Taylor and Jonson Clarke-Harris.

Winnall’s agents, Omnisports, also represent his Owls boss Garry Monk and teammates Sam Hutchinson and Ashley Baker.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers trainee has scored five goals in 36 games since his 2017 transfer from Barnsley, for which the Tykes are said to have received around £500,000.
