Joost van Aken scored his first goal for Vfl Osnabruck as the Sheffield Wednesday defender’s loan club beat Karlsruher 3-0 on Sunday.

The goal, which rounded off the win, was only the fourth of the Dutchman’s senior career and moved Osnabruck into third position.

The Lower Saxony side are newcomers to Germany’s second-tier this season but have now won three of their first five fixtures – and are ahead of Bundesliga regulars VfB Stuttgart (who have a game in hand), Nurnburg and Hannover 96.

They also sit four points and 10 places higher than Jos Luhukay’s St. Pauli outfit, who threw away a 2-0 lead to draw 3-3 against Dynamo Dresden on Saturday.

Van Aken’s Sheffield Wednesday teammate Matt Penney recently joined St. Pauli on loan but was sent off on his debut for two bookable offences.

The 2017 Owls recruit, who according to Transfermarkt cost £2.7 million, will have a year left on his Hillsborough contract when his Osnabruck spell ends next summer.
