Sheffield Wednesday defender Ciaran Brennan has told Yorkshire Live that his recovery from a dislocated shoulder is ‘coming along nicely’.
Brennan, 23, joined League Two side Swindon Town on loan last season. He went on to feature 17 times in the league for the Robins and he was enjoying a strong run in the starting XI before his campaign was ended prematurely.
In a 3-0 win over Harrogate Town back in February, Brennan suffered a dislocated shoulder which required surgery. The Irishman didn’t feature again for Swindon but now he’s back with Wednesday and stepping up his recovery ahead of the 2023/24 season.
Speaking to Yorkshire Live, Brennan said of his return to fitness:
“It’s good and I’m getting there. I had the operation on the shoulder about seven or eight weeks ago. It’s coming along nicely.
“I’ve got four pins in my shoulder now, so it’s not a great healer and it’ll take a while but I’m just looking forward to getting back in for pre-season now. I’ve had a while away from football so I’m ready to get back at it as soon as I can.”
Brennan made his league debut for the Owls way back in the 2018/19 season, but had his best run in the side in the 2021/22 campaign when an injury crisis at centre-back forced Darren Moore into utilising the academy graduate.
But Brennan impressed Moore who said of the player:
“Ciaran’s done really well coming in. He’s got a wonderful appetite for the game. For a young player, every time he’s trained with us he’s always had a wonderful belief about himself.
“In terms of coming into the system that’s he’s come in to, he’s shown, for someone so young, a wonderful maturity about him. I think that’s been the biggest thing I’ve noted with him.”
A part to play next season?
Brennan could certainly be in and around the first-team next season. It’d be a big step up for him, going from a League Two loan move to the Championship, and off the back of a long-term injury, but he showed promise last season and at 23 years old, it could be make or break time for him.
If not then a loan move could be on the cards. He could drop down to League One for a season to gain some valuable experience and eventually return to Wednesday as a much more rounded player.
But the good thing for him is that he’s stepping up his recovery in time for pre-season.
