Sheffield Wednesday are set to offer Troy Deeney a player-coach role at Hillsborough. Xisco Munoz has managed the striker before during his time at Watford and he’s keen for a reunion.
According to the Daily Mail, Deeney is set to be offered something by the Owls. Last week some loose links came to light after Munoz was handed the opportunity to replace Darren Moore in South Yorkshire.
Deeney is without a club at the moment and can move to Wednesday on a free transfer. Last season he was on the books at Birmingham, scoring seven goals in 34 appearances for the Blues.
Now, it looks as though Munoz has found a place for him in his Wednesday squad. He is keen to get some new signings through the door as he settles into his new role ahead of the new campaign.
Munoz will get a complete backroom team together in due course. He’s joined the club at a time when the squad desperately needs to get down to work though and the puzzle might take some piecing together.
Deeney might prove an ideal influence to have on the squad behind the scenes. However, the jury might remain out over whether or not he can still have much impact on the pitch these days at 35-years-old.
Munoz is a huge fan of Deeney. When he was in charge of Watford he called the player ‘perfect’ and ‘excellent’ after a win over Stoke City back in 2021.
Wednesday set to offer Deeney a Hillsborough role
Some Wednesday fans might be forgiven for being somewhat underwhelmed by this. The Owls already have Michael Smith and Lee Gregory who are both in their thirties and another ageing striker isn’t ideal.
Deeney does have a proven record of scoring goals in the Championship. His seven for Birmingham last season took his tally in the second tier to 95 from 278 appearances.
But, this is hardly the start to the transfer window that Wednesday will have expected when they won promotion. The squad likely needs some energy and it’s hard to imagine Deeney providing that.
As a coach, this doesn’t look like a bad move. Hopefully, his role with Wednesday will be geared more towards that side of things, with the hope that he can offer some backup on the pitch.
Wednesday have to get busy in the transfer market. They need some quality and one hope will be that Deeney’s arrival can start a busy period of activity at the football club.
