Barry Bannan is closing in a match record at Sheffield Wednesday this season.
The former Scotland international could be set to enter the Owls’ all-time top 15 appearance makers at some point during the 2023/24 campaign.
Barry Bannan joined Sheffield Wednesday from Crystal Palace in 2015 and has been one of their most important players ever since, being named in the PFA Team of the Year on three occasions, the League One Team of the Season twice and Sheffield Wednesday’s Player of the Year once.
The midfielder has netted 30 goals and provided 63 assists during his time at Hillsborough and has continued to establish himself as one of the EFL’s most effective players, despite approaching his 34th birthday.
As Bannan continues to play an important role in Sheffield Wednesday‘s starting line-up, he is now closing in on making history for the club.
A further two appearances will see him overtake Tom Brittleton to become the 17th highest appearance maker, while he will need to rack up another 13 games to enter the top 15th and match Ron Springett (384).
Not taking any Cup fixtures into account, this could see Bannan catch Springett up in January. If he was to play every Championship fixture between now and then, he could have make his 384th appearance against Watford on January 27.
How many appearances could Barry Bannan make?
Bannan is very capable of going even further, however he would have to catch up with Liam Palmer, who is looking to add to his 406 appearances for the club. However, the 32-year-old’s position in the team does look under threat after failing to play a single minute of football under Danny Rohl.
Barry Bannan’s brilliant form for Sheffield Wednesday over the course of seven or eight years has been a breath of fresh air for supporters, with the midfielder seeming to age like fine wine.
The veteran has only managed one goal this season but his experience and leadership is certainly very effective for the Owls, while his impact on the team since 2015 will never go unnoticed.
