Sheffield Wednesday told they need two things in January, one move would seriously impact Ike Ugbo

We are now heading into December, which means one eye is on the January transfer window, and Sheffield Wednesday’s shopping list has been revealed.

It has been an indifferent start to the season for Sheffield Wednesday, with the Owls yet to put together a consistent run of form.

However, the win against Hull City in midweek was a real highlight for Danny Rohl’s side and could give them the momentum they need to push on and establish themselves in midtable and beyond.

With Rohl discussing his relief after the embargo issues were resolved recently, Wednesday can now start to think about what’s needed in the New Year.

Alex Miller tells Sheffield Wednesday to sign Ike Ugbo rotation option

In the latest episode of the All Wednesday podcast, Alex Miller discussed what the best case scenario would be for Wednesday, and suggested something needs to be done to bolster the attack after Ike Ugbo’s struggles in front of goal.

“I think it depends on what they want to achieve, and how close they are to the play-off places or the relegation spots [by then],” Miller said. “There’s no secret at all, the [missed] chances is a big issue, and another striker with a similar profile to Ike Ugbo would be useful. Not to replace, but to offer rotation.”

This goes hand-in-hand with Dom Howson’s recent suggestion that Sheffield Wednesday must add ‘attacking reinforcements’ to their squad in January.

But, that’s not all, Miller also thinks the Owls need to try and add a new defender to their ranks, too, in spite of Max Lowe’s emergence as a key player for Rohl lately.

“A left-footed centre-back would also be useful,” Miller added. “Akin Famewo isn’t back until March, and there’s a lot of reliance on Max Lowe there now. But you can see the difference when it’s Max, a right-footer standing in. A fair bit to be done, in an ideal world.”

Competition for place could bring out the best in Ike Ugbo

While the idea of a similar player to Ugbo coming in may be a concern for the Canadian striker, it could also be a really big positive.

Having another new player around would take some of the pressure and attention away from Ugbo, while also giving him the motivation to push him to perform better.

Rohl has gambled on the partnership between Ugbo and Michael Smith lately, but that appears to have been abandoned now.

And, with Smith scoring again in the win over Hull, it remains to be seen whether there will be a spot for Ugbo in Rohl’s lineup for the clash with Derby County this weekend.
