Sheffield Wednesday have been placed under a registration embargo, with a £2million debt currently owed to HMRC.
Sheffield Wednesday’s season goes from one controversy to another.
After a whirlwind summer, followed up by a turbulent start to the season both on and off the pitch, it looked like the Owls‘ fortunes were turning.
Danny Rohl came in and Dejphon Chansiri put together a strong-looking backroom team to his credit.
But he’s since caused a stir after asking fans to pay the £2million debt owned to HMRC, in another typical Chansiri outburst aimed at the fans.
The Owls owner has suggested that Wednesday could be placed under a three-window transfer embargo if the issue isn’t cleared in time, and fans are obviously worrying about the long-term future of their club.
Talk of administration will always cause fear among fans, and with Wednesday’s financial situation appearing to have been dire for a while now, and with this new HMRC debt having been revealed, those fears are growing.
But journalist Ricky Charlesworth has helped to ease those fears. In a recent Q&A on Yorkshire Live, he was quizzed on the possibility of Sheffield Wednesday going into administration, to which he replied:
“The EFL have an active relationship with HRMC and so if there’s any delays in payments they will be kept in the loop. Of course the longer this issue goes unresolved the worse potential penalties get. The sanctions include points deductions, more embargoes and even administration. The last club to be put into admin was Derby County back in 2021. Wednesday aren’t anywhere near that right now but the longer this goes on, the more worrying it gets.”

It’s a mess right now. It has been for a while but it looks like things could quickly become perilous for the Owls.
Charlesworth’s update though will ease some fears of administration; for the time being anyway.
Chansiri really has a lot to answer for and he has a long road ahead of he’s to secure the long-term future of Sheffield Wednesday.
Right now, Focus will be on results on the pitch, with Rohl guiding the Owls to their first win of the season last time out, ahead of another tough game vs Bristol City next weekend.
Another win here would really breed confidence and take fans’ minds off of matters off the pitch.
