Sheffield Wednesday star steals the show vs Watford with dominant display

Sheffield Wednesday are down on their luck at the moment and were once again left heartbroken on Wednesday night.

Wednesday looked to be on course for a maiden win since September when Charlie McNeill bagged in the first half of the game.

However, after holding out until the 97th minute, the Hornets struck right at the death with Vivaldo Semedo forcing an effort beyond Pierce Charles.

It leaves Wednesday still searching for a first win for many months, but in the last few weeks, the performance levels have been far better.

That sentiment was echoed by one player’s performance at Watford as he produced a Man of the Match performance at Vicarage Road.

Svante Ingelsson stars vs Watford

The versatile midfielder has been a brilliant player for Wednesday since checking in from Hansa Rostock in the summer of 2024.

The Swede has really knuckled down at Hillsborough this season and epitomised the fighting spirit that Henrik Pedersen has demanded from his players.

On Wednesday night, he was the standout Owls performer and produced a masterclass from the midfield engine room.

Ingelsson has really stepped up at Wednesday at a time when the club needs genuine fighters and leaders.

The 27-year-old is playing some of the best football of his career right now and with Barry Bannan limping out of the action at the weekend, Ingelsson will become even more important.

Ingelsson is a player Wednesday must try desperately to keep

Adapting to life in the Championship at 27 is tricky, but Ingelsson has done it with aplomb.

Ingelsson was a mainstay under Danny Rohl, and he’s developed the mantle of a real leader since Pedersen was handed the firefighting task.

It’s not clear when Ingelsson’s contract expires at Hillsborough, and no contracts will be getting extended whilst the ongoing takeover situation is being finalised.

However, once things are back on the straight and narrow, one of the first jobs for the new owners needs to be to get Ingelsson tied to Wednesday for a few more years.
