Lee Gregory brought up a century of appearances for Sheffield Wednesday during the Championship clash at Plymouth last night. However, it wasn’t a time for celebration as the Owls were beaten again.
Wednesday lost 3-0 to Argyle and during the game, Gregory was largely ineffective. In fairness to the centre-forward that wasn’t all through his own doing and service was in short supply.
Gregory has been with Wednesday since 2021 when he signed from Stoke City. During his 100 appearances for the Owls, the 35-year-old has scored 29 goals and claimed 12 assists, helping the team win promotion last season.
Gregory struggles to make impact during milestone outing
Some statistics from last night’s drab performance showcase that Wednesday aren’t getting the best out of Gregory. This is a conundrum for Danny Rohl and it will be something he’s keen to work on.
The striker started the game in a natural centre-forward position and he showcased lots of effort. However, things just didn’t go right for him and his 100th outing was one to forget.
Who Scored shows that Gregory touched the ball just 24 times. This number was fewer than Cameron Dawson who played in goal and that is quite baffling.
Furthermore, Gregory was guilty of missing one big chance during his 64 minutes on the pitch. He also won just 33% of his duels and failed to register a single shot on target.
Gregory can still have Wednesday impact
Despite being 35, Gregory looks fit. He hasn’t shied away from putting a shift in during the poor run of form and he just needs a bit of a break in front of goal.
Getting joy out of Gregory this season will now fall with Rohl. The German boss has to find a way to get chances for the player and if he can do that the goals should flow.
The striker has experience in the Championship and there is no doubt that he’s still capable. That said, his 100th appearance will be one that doesn’t live long in the memory.
