Charlie McNeill has been flooded with praise since making his debut for Sheffield Wednesday yesterday.

The striker arrived at Hillsborough having only played 24 matches of senior football in his career, but went onto make his 25th in the Carabao Cup.

McNeill made his first start for Sheffield Wednesday and shocked fans when he claimed a brace instead ten minutes.

The 20-year-old was hailed for his ‘stunning’ debut, while Danny Rohl claimed his stellar performance wasn’t at all ‘surprising’ to him.

After pushing the Owls onto a 2-0 win over Hull City, McNeill took to social media to share his own delight at his first match in blue and white.

Olaf Kobacki cheers on McNeill after debut brace

He wrote on his post: “Delighted to have made my debut and score my first goals for the club. Travelling fans were class.”

McNeill gained plenty of messages of support in response from current teammates, with the likes of Marvin Johnson and Pierce Charles replying, as well as former teammates such as Harry Amass, Joe Hugill and Charlie Savage.

The applause didn’t stop there though, with Olaf Kobacki taking to his own Instagram story to praise his teammate as they both made their debut together.

The Polish forward shared a photo of the two players celebrating together, with the caption: “@charliemcneill9 what a debut 🤩. Keep going mate 🔥”.

Kobacki and McNeill both shared the pitch together for the first time, having arrived a week apart.

Kobacki made a ‘reserved’ but quality performance

While he didn’t score, the young winger certainly made his own impression on his debut.

Kobacki was given a seven rating by The Star, who wrote: “A little reserved in the early exchanges, the young, snake-hipped Pole grew into the game and provided cause for excitement, darting about and causing problems.”

The 23-year-old did look a handful for Hull and almost scored, but was particularly impressive tracking back too. Kobacki made the second-most successful tackles on the pitch, as well as winning six of his 9 ground duels.

It was McNeill that rightfully claimed the headlines, but Kobacki silently impressed after a quiet start.

The attacker will have to do a lot to force his way into the starting line-up given the performance that was put on against Plymouth Argyle, but he won’t be expected to be the finished article straight away.

Kobacki will likely need time to adapt to the Championship, but could be a really positive player under Rohl.
