Sheffield Wednesday have appointed a new goalkeeping coach in Sal Bibbo.
According to Rob Staton, journalist for BBC Sheffield, as he posted on his X account (formerly known as Twitter) that Bibbo has been appointed as the new goalkeeping coach at Wednesday.
It would be yet another addition to manager Danny Rohl’s backroom team, following the appointments of Chris Powell and Sascha Lense amongst others.
Who is Sal Bibbo?
Bibbo is a former professional goalkeeper, spending most of his career in the lower leagues with clubs such as Reading, Havant & Waterlooville and Bath City.
He then joined Reading as their goalkeeping coach on a part-time basis initially, before becoming full-time in 2006.
He has also coached at the Nike academy, before joining Arsenal in 2019.
There he was the goalkeeping coach for their under-23 team, but also helped the first team, coaching the likes of Petr Cech, Bernd Leno and Emiliano Martinez.
He then joined Brighton in 2021, where he has been coaching their youngsters too.
Killian Cahill, a goalkeeper for Brighton, was quoted as saying that Bibbo helped him out enormously in his development.
“Sal Bibbo has been unbelievable, from the moment I got here. I was with the under-18s when I first joined but most weeks I’d be training with the under-21s with Sal,” he told the club’s website in 2022.
“This season I’ve been with him full time and I feel like I’ve really progressed, I built that platform in pre-season. He’s given me confidence and helped me in a lot of aspects that will hopefully make me a Premier League goalkeeper one day.”
Would he be a good appointment?
Bibbo is clearly an esteemed and experienced goalkeeping coach.
Hopefully he will be able to bring some of that experience to Wednesday, and help out the two goalkeepers in Devis Vasquez and Cameron Dawson.
Wednesday have shipped the fourth most goals in the Championship this season with 27 goals.
The Owls need to shore up at the back, and hopefully Bibbo will help that happen.
