Sheffield Wednesday chose not to sign Aden Flint during the summer transfer window. Yesterday, he captained Mansfield to a memorable 4-1 victory over Notts County and scored in the process.
The Owls took Flint on loan for the second half of 2022/23 when Mark McGuinness was recalled from his loan. He proved a quality signing for the club and helped them win promotion to the Championship.
After his loan, Wednesday decided that they weren’t going to sign Flint on a free transfer. He had been released by Stoke City and ultimately he ended up signing a contract with Mansfield.
Flint scores first goal since Wednesday departure
The 34-year-old is a sensational signing for Mansfield. He’s far too good for League Two and he’s proving that with each passing week that he plays for the Stags.
Wednesday might have better options than Flint but on a one-year deal and a free transfer, he’d have surely been a better option than some of the new signings.
Yesterday, Flint was magnificent for the Stags. He won most of his tackles, plenty of headers and he crashed home a wonderful goal to make it 3-1 to Mansfield.
Wednesday could have done at lot worse than Flint
Bambo Diaby was added in the summer transfer window. Although he’s younger than Flint and has a bit more pace, there is an argument that Wednesday might have been better going for the experienced defender.
Flint is playing out of his skin for Mansfield right now. Nigel Clough’s gain is certainly Wednesday’s loss given how the club are currently performing in the Championship.
Naturally, it’s all hindsight and Flint might not have been up to the demands of the Championship. He remains a popular figure at Hillsborough though and his departure was perhaps a mistake in the summer.
