When does Sheffield Wednesday’s pre-season start?

The Sheffield Wednesday first-team squad reconvened at their Middlewood Road training ground on July 3 to start their pre-season training in 2023. They regrouped just five days before their first friendly.

As of July 21, Sheffield Wednesday have announced seven pre-season friendlies for the summer of 2023. The Owls will also hold a warm-weather training camp in Spain, during which they will hold two of their friendlies. But the Owls may still confirm extra friendlies as they prepare to return to the Championship.

The summer of 2023 will see Sheffield Wednesday’s pre-season fixture list feature an array of English and Spanish sides. The Owls have plotted ties with York City, Chesterfield, Burnley, Real Murcia, CD Eldense, Doncaster Rovers and Luton Town. Just Premier League new boys Luton will play at Hillsborough, though.

Chesterfield have invited Sheffield Wednesday to the National League side’s Technique Stadium to contest Drew Talbot’s testimonial. The versatile operator played for both teams during his career having emerged from Sheffield Wednesday’s academy before having spells at Luton Town, Chesterfield and Portsmouth.

Talbot’s testimonial friendly split visits to York City and Burnley’s training ground for Sheffield Wednesday. The Owls start their pre-season at the Minstermen in another clash against a National League club. While Burnley have invited the Owls to their Gawthorpe base to contest a behind-closed-doors training exercise.

Sheffield Wednesday will also meet Primera Federacion outfit Real Murcia and Segunda Division team CD Eldense in Spain before travelling to Doncaster Rovers. The Hillsborough natives added friendlies with the Spanish third and second-tier sides to their schedule to add ties to the week-long training camp in Murcia.

Luton, meanwhile, were a late addition to Sheffield Wednesday’s pre-season fixture list with the Hatters encounter confirmed on July 7. The Owls have invited Rob Edward’s side to visit Hillsborough toward the end of the summer ahead of the Bedfordshire club embarking on their first top-flight season since 1992.
