Rumours have began to circulate online that Red Bull could be interested in a possible takeover of Sheffield Wednesday.
Fans on social media have speculated that Red Bull could grow their footballing portfolio with a potential takeover of crisis club Sheffield Wednesday, who last month appointed a former Red Bull Leipzig coach in Danny Rohl.
The energy drinks giant has a hand in many sports and a hand in many football clubs too, including the likes of Leipzig, RB Salzburg, and New York Red Bulls too.
But in an interview with The Star, Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri responded to rumours of a possible Red Bull taking over, saying:
“Some have said that Red Bull want to buy. But if they wanted to buy a club in England I believe that it would be one in the Premier League.
The Owls remain in last place of the Championship table following a controversial 1-0 defeat away at Bristol City last weekend; Barry Bannan was sent off in that game but that red card has since been rescinded.
Could a Sheffield Wednesday takeover be in the offing?
As much as fans would like to see new owners in place, it doesn’t seem like Chansiri will be selling up anytime soon.
There’s nothing to suggest that Chansiri is looking to sell, and given how much money he’s pumped into the club, it looks like he’ll want to make some back before he considers selling the club.
Red Bull rumours make sense given the Rohl link, but given Wednesday’s predicament, they always seemed a bit far-fetched, and Chansiri is perhaps right in suggesting that the company would want to buy a Premier League side.
But if Chansiri continues to run the club into the ground and the fans continue to protest and advocate his exit, then the Owls owner may well be forced into a premature sale.
