Sheffield Wednesday have gone three games unbeaten to move off the bottom of the Championship table, but they still face an uphill battle this season.
A draw against Leicester City gave Sheffield Wednesday the confidence to beat Blackburn Rovers at Hillsborough, then win away at Stoke City.
Anthony Musaba netted the goal that earned the Owls three points at Stoke, resulting in Alex Neil’s departure from the club.
Danny Rohl now finds his side in 23rd place of the table and eight points adrift, with Darren Moore’s Huddersfield Town the team in 21st place of the table.
There’s still a mountain to climb for Wednesday, and pundit Darren Ambrose doesn’t think the Owls can do it.
Darren Ambrose tips Sheffield Wednesday for relegation
Speaking on the EFL All Access podcast, former Football League man Ambrose spoke fondly of Rohl and his assistant Chris Powell, but tipped the Owls to go down this season.
He said:
“It gives them every opportunity to get out, I just think it’s too much. It’s too much to do. You look at the three teams promoted, we talk about Plymouth, they won League One last season, how they got ahead of Ipswich I don’t know, but Ipswich 2nd… and Sheffield Wednesday… it looks like Plymouth and Sheffield Wednesday will get dragged into this [relegation zone], Sheffield Wednesday are there. They could be two to go back down again, but they’ve both got good managers who could potentially bring them back up.”
Is survival ‘too much’ for Wednesday and Danny Rohl?
Before that Leicester City game, most would’ve backed the Owls for relegation, including the vast majority of Wednesday fans.
But there’s now a huge amount of belief running rife at the club and wins against Blackburn and Stoke prove that Sheffield Wednesday have the quality and capability to get more wins on the board.
But whether it’ll be enough remains to be seen.
Wednesday certainly have a chance now, but their survival chances could largely depend on other teams.
QPR are putting points on the board and climbing to safety and Rotherham could yet have a new manager bounce under Leam Richardson.
Huddersfield seem to be slipping up a bit and Plymouth are struggling for wins, like Ambrose says, so for Sheffield Wednesday, their fate this season will be determined by a few things.
January will have a big say in the Owls’ season. Owner Dejphon Chansiri looks set to bring in some new players with a striker looking like the priority, but again, whether it’ll be enough remains to be seen.
