Michael Smith has warned of Sheffield Wednesday’s potentially ‘horrible’ ending to the campaign.
Sheffield Wednesday now have only three matches left to confirm their place in the Championship next season, though still sit a point adrift inside the relegation zone.
The Owls have come very far since Danny Rohl arrived at the club, having failed to win a game in their first ten matches under Xisco Munoz.
Wednesday already sat seven points from safety when the German was appointed, but have gone onto win 12 matches since and recently won five in six games.
However, their impressive run was ruined by Leeds United last month and they have since dropped 12 points.
The Yorkshire outfit have looked a completely different team to the one that began the season though, while Rohl has been heavily praised for the ‘unbelievable‘ job he has done at Hillsborough.
But unfortunately, Wednesday could still end up in League One next season if they aren’t able to enjoy a brilliant final run-in against Blackburn, West Brom and Sunderland over the next few weeks.
Relegation would be really ‘tough to take’ now
Michael Smith, who has recently been brought back into the starting line-up, has explained why relegation would now be even more ‘horrible’ under Rohl.
Speaking to SportsBoom.com, the striker said: “We fully believe we can stay up, the lads are confident we can do it.
“It would be really tough to take if we got relegated this season, especially with all the hard work that was put in last year to get promoted.
“To not build on that – and stay in the league – that would be horrible.
“The minimum requirement is to stay in the league. It would be a massive disappointment if we didn’t, not only for us but the fans and everyone associated with the club.
“But we’ve still got three games and it [staying up] is in our hands.”
Why Sheffield Wednesday deserve more
To football fans that don’t pay much attention to Sheffield Wednesday, they would probably wonder what the big deal with Danny Rohl is and why the team will feel like they deserve to stay up.
But if it wasn’t for the German coach and the complete transformation of the squad, the tactics and the mindset at Middlewood Road, the Owls could have been comfortably relegated for some time by now.
Wednesday’s squad really isn’t up to Championship standard and they already looked set for the drop before Rohl’s arrival, so to still be in with a chance by only a single point says a lot.
These players have worked their socks off to stay up this term and it will be heartbreaking if they can’t do it, especially given the amount of first team players that could leave as a result.
