Sheffield Wednesday are on the hunt for their sixth permanent manager since the start of 2018.
Jos Luhukay was the man at the helm at the start of 2018. Since then, Steve Bruce, Garry Monk, Tony Pulis, and now Darren Moore have all come and gone, with Moore’s shock exit confirmed earlier this week.
And after the initial reaction of Moore’s exit died down, a potential replacement emerged in former manager Carlos Carvalhal.
The Portuguese boss is a beloved name among Owls fans after guiding the club to two consecutive play-off finishes during his reign between 2015 and 2017, but during last night’s fiery fans’ forum, owner Dejphon Chansiri shut down rumours of Carvalhal potentially returning to the club.
Chansiri said, as quoted by Yorkshire Live:
“Many fans are talking about Carlos. No chance.“
And Chansiri went on to discuss the potential timeline for a new Wednesday boss during the forum too, saying:
“We will have the new coach soon. I’ll try before players come back. In Championship it’s more difficult than League One. It’s easier to recruit faster in League One. Majority of players are on holiday at the moment. Please be more patient.“
And aside from those mentioned in bookies’ lists, the only other concrete report of a potential new Wednesday boss comes from The Star, who said yesterday that former Chaves boss Vitor Campelos has put his name forward.
The 48-year-old is well-regarded in his native Portugal after guiding Chaves to promotion from the Portuguese second tier and then to a 7th place finish last time round.
Who next?
It’s a mystery who Wednesday will bring in. One would’ve liked to think that Chansiri had some names in mind when the decision to part ways with Moore was made, but now the club faces a race against the clock to find a new boss and to also get all their summer business done before the start of next season.
It’s certainly a tricky time for the club but Chansiri seems confident of finding a new boss soon – finding the right one though is a different question.
