Sheffield Wednesday are without a manager, but a new appointment doesn’t seem to be close.
Sheffield Wednesday and Darren Moore parted ways earlier this week. It was a shock move and now the Owls are tasked with finding a new manager and going about their summer transfer business, with no Head of Recruitment in place to make things all the more difficult.
And aside from bookies’ lists which link any and every out of work manager with the vacancy, only two names have been linked with trusted sources – Carlos Carvalhal and Vitor Campelos, though a retun for Carvalhal has since been ruled out by owner Dejphon Chansiri.
The latest on the Sheffield Wednesday manager front comes from The Star. They say that Wednesday are ‘still in the shortlist phase at this point in time’ and that ‘interviews set to follow once the undoubtedly long list of submitted CVs has been whittled down’.
And providing some further insight into the club’s managerial search, Chansiri had this to say in a recent Q&A with the club:
“We have had many applications, from big names to names who are not so familiar. But it doesn’t matter to me about names, the most important thing is that the new manager will be the right fit for Sheffield Wednesday.”
Chansiri continued:
“Of course my preference is to have the manager in place for when the players return but at the same time, this appointment will not be rushed. It is all about getting the right manager for our club, whether that is from the UK or overseas or anywhere in the world.
“I want a manager who plays attacking football and it will not be based on money, it will be based on coaching ability and who can bring the right philosophy to Sheffield Wednesday. We must always look to improve as a club.”
Who next for Sheffield Wednesday?
Chansiri is quite open in his above comments. Of course though he has a lot to make up for given the current situation of the club, but he can do that by bringing in a good manager and then giving him what he needs to put together a strong side ahead of next season.
Whether either of those thing will happen remains to be seen. But if Sheffield Wednesday really do have a lot of interest, and from big names as well, then they shouldn’t have an issue in appointing the right manager for them.
Expect to see names being linked with the job over the coming days as we move closer and closer to the start of the 2023/24 campaign.
