Sheffield Wednesday manager latest: Overseas names flood Owls’ manager rumour mill

Sheffield Wednesday remain without a manager – more than two weeks after Darren Moore’s exit and a month away from the start of the new season.

The hope was that Sheffield Wednesday would have a new manager in place by now. But more than a fortnight after Moore’s shock exit from the club, Sheffield Wednesday remain without a manager and are seemingly no closer to naming their next boss.

Several names have been linked as Dejphon Chansiri steps up proceedings. A month from today though, the club kicks off the 2023/24 Championship season in a home game v Southampton – before that though, there’s a lot of work for the Owls to do in the transfer market.

What is the latest on Sheffield Wednesday’s managerial hunt?

More and more names are being linked with the Hillsborough vacancy, and recent reports seem to indicate that Chansiri is favouring an overseas appointment, with several foreign names being linked.

Slaven Bilic’s name continues to be mentioned alongside Sheffield Wednesday, with the Croatian said to have been interviewed for the job.

And another former Watford boss is said to be of interest to the Owls – Xisco Munoz. The Spaniard guided Watford to promotion to the Premier League in 2021, but Nixon says (via Inside Futbol) that Bilic and Munoz aren’t the only overseas names on Sheffield Wednesday’s managerial shortlist.

And yesterday, reports linked Danish coach Jess Thorup with the Sheffield Wednesday opening. The 53-year-old was most recently in charge of FC Copenhagen and has previously managed Champions League sides in FC Midtjylland and Gent.

That’s all the latest on the Sheffield Wednesday managerial front. Whilst work is definitely underway in finding Moore’s successor, it doesn’t look like Chansiri has a standout candidate for the job and being so close to the start of the new season – and with so much to do in the transfer market – it’s certainly a pressing time for the club.
