Marvin Johnson has extended his stay with Sheffield Wednesday.
Johnson, 32, was set to become a free agent today. But the club have announced this morning that Johnson has put pen to paper on a new contract, although the length of his new deal has not been disclosed.
The former Oxford United, Middlesbrough, and one-time Sheffield United man enters his 13th year as a professional footballer, having worked his way up from the non-league to the Championship.
Johnson joined Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer ahead of the 2021/22 season. He’s been a prominent first-team player since, racking up 95 appearances in all competitions, with 44 of those coming in last season’s League One campaign in which Johnson also scored three and assisted seven.
Speaking to the club after penning his new contract, the Birmingham-born Johnson had this to say:
“I’ve spent the last two years here and I’ve loved it. It’s a great club and the season we had last year was justified with the work we put in and I’m excited to be here back in the Championship.
“Every time I put the shirt on I want to give 100%, you want to play every game and that’s my objective.
“It’s good to have the core of the squad still here from last season and it gives us the morale and something to build off.
“We got the job done and now we need to build on that.”
Johnson has also been linked with a move to Ipswich Town this summer, though that link was quickly shut down.
A boost for Sheffield Wednesday…
Johnson, like many of his Sheffield Wednesday teammates, faced criticism during the 2021/22 season especially.
But on the whole, Johnson has been a huge player for the Owls and the news of his new contract is definitely a positive for the club ahead of next season.
Johnson adds a huge amount of versatility and experience to the side, with the 32-year-old capable of playing in a variety of roles.
Keeping the bulk of last season’s promotion-winning side together seems hugely important for the Owls, especially so given the current unrest surrounding the club.
Fans will want to see more of the same this month with a lot of new signings needed as well. But a new deal for Johnson is a great start to Sheffield Wednesday’s July plans.
