Sheffield Wednesday did something last night that they haven’t done in almost seven years.
Sheffield Wednesday went level on points with 20th place yesterday as they beat Plymouth Argyle on home turf.
Ian Poveda was controversially refused his opener for offside, before Djeidi Gassama netted his first goal since New Year’s Day to gift the hosts all three points.
The Owls have now won five of the last six games and have also picked up four clean sheets in the process.
With games coming up against Leeds United and Ipswich Town, it could be very tricky to keep up this brilliant form. However, for now, their winning streak has given them one record they haven’t matched in almost seven years.
Last night’s victory was their fourth in a row, which they haven’t done since April 2017.
The last time they did it, their run actually extended to an impressive six consecutive wins in the Championship. Sheffield Wednesday beat Rotherham, Newcastle, Cardiff, QPR, Derby County and Ipswich – scoring 10 goals and conceding only three.
The run led to the Yorkshire outfit finishing fourth in the second tier, though we all know how that campaign ended.
Sheffield Wednesday are also in eleventh place in the form table over their last ten games, while they would actually be in the playoff positions if it was based on the last six matches.
Danny Rohl‘s side have arguably had a run of winnable matches though, while for a majority of the campaign they have failed to lay a finger on the ‘bigger’ clubs.
What do Sheffield Wednesday need now?
Their two upcoming fixtures could potentially make or break the rest of the campaign, as if they lose six points then that will be a huge hill to climb in the final eight games – especially when they will still have the likes of Middlesbrough, West Brom and Sunderland to face.
They will need another two wins to match that streak from 2017, and surely shock victories over Leeds and Ipswich would catapult them to safety.
The relegation scrap this season is incredibly tight, with only six points between 12th place and 23rd place. Fans certainly won’t be getting too excited, but it would be pretty crazy if the Owls managed to finish in the upper end of the bottom half.
