Hull City have recently been linked with a move for former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.
Former Manchester City youngster Dele-Bashiru left Sheffield Wednesday after an impressive three-year spell last summer, eventually going on to sign a four-year deal with Turkish outfit Hatayspor.
And since, the 22-year-old has shone, scoring four and assisting four more in 12 Super Lig appearances, and attracting the interest of Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship rivals Hull City.
Reports coming out of Turkey say that the Tigers have already opened talks over a potential January swoop for the one-cap Nigerian international, who scored six in 86 total appearances for the Owls.
What has Carlton Palmer said?
Speaking to Football League World about Hull City’s links to Dele-Bashiru, former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer said:
“I think he’s a real talent and I felt the 22-year-old was badly advised not to sign a new contract with Sheffield Wednesday, which hampered his game time.”
Dele-Bashiru eventually fell out of favour at Sheffield Wednesday. He didn’t feature in the play-off semi-final legs against Peterborough United and he played just five minutes of the final against Barnsley.
Despite that, he was offered a new contract going into this season, but he obviously rejected that and chose to sign for Hatayspor instead.
Palmer went on to say:
“I just worry about who is advising the player, because he needs to settle down, he needs to stay at a club and he needs to play, so his reputation can enhance and build his career. He’s a real, real talent.”
Dele-Bashiru at Sheffield Wednesday
It’s hard to say whether he was badly advised or not.
Leaving a newly-promoted Championship club to sign for Hatayspor, albeit a top flight team in Turkey, was a surprise move, but it’s paid off.
Dele-Bashiru has discovered his scoring touch and he’s becoming very well-regarded in Turkey, with this emerging link to Hull City a credit to how much he’s improved since leaving Hillsborough.
And there’s no doubting that the Owls could’ve used a player of his ilk this time round, but whether or not Dele-Bashiru would’ve had the same season if he stayed remains to be seen, if not unlikely.
Palmer’s comments are certainly interesting and there may have been something going on behind the scenes which lead to Dele-Bashiru’s exit.
But again, he’s found himself in Turkey and he could yet return to England and to the Championship in January, and show Sheffield Wednesday what they’ve missed out on.
