Sheffield Wednesday have taken Ben Heneghan to Spain for their pre-season tour as Xisco Munoz continues to monitor him. The player was released by the club shortly after the promotion win but the club have allowed him to continue his rehabilitation at Hillsborough.
The Star has now claimed that Heneghan remains with the squad. With no new signings checking in on Penistone Road just yet, Wednesday fans might hope to see the centre-back handed a new deal.
Heneghan only signed for Wednesday in the summer of 2022. One odd aspect of his arrival from AFC Wimbledon at the time was that no details about the length of the contract were announced.
It turns out that Wednesday gave him a single year, which is quite unusual. Heneghan suffered a serious knee injury in October but he is now fighting his way back to full fitness over in Spain.
Heneghan only made 13 outings in the blue and white of Wednesday. Given that he spent so much of the season out injured, he was perhaps disappointed that he wasn’t handed another year.
In hindsight, the departure of Darren Moore has handed him a huge opportunity. Letting him use Hillsborough for his rehab is one thing but taking him on a pre-season tour to Spain means that Munoz wants to have a look at him.

It will be interesting to see where the land lies with the defender here. The Owls could perhaps welcome another central defender; although one who offered some Championship experience would probably be welcomed more.
Heneghan played well when he was called upon in League One last season. However, he’s never played in the second tier and that might represent cause for concern for Munoz when he makes his decision.
Either way, the defender does now have an opportunity. By giving his all in Spain and however long he remains at the club, he has another chance to win himself a new Wednesday deal.
