The January transfer window is just around the corner now, and while Danny Rohl will likely want to add a couple of players to his squad, he also has the opportunity to send some young talent out on loan, too.

Sheffield Wednesday have made a decent start to the season, if not a little inconsistent, and currently sit in 15th place after 15th games.

The ambition for the Owls this season is to steer clear of a relegation battle and attempt to really establish themselves as a comfortable Championship side.

Some improvements will need to be made in the next transfer window, particularly with Sheffield Wednesday struggling in front of goal.

However, just as important as any potential incomings is the matter of helping Wednesday’s top young players develop, too, and one academy starlet could be set to leave on loan in the New Year.

Sam Reed loan move on the horizon

21-year-old centre-half Sam Reed is said to be the subject of intense interest from a number of clubs in the National League, with a view to securing a loan move for the Sheffield Wednesday academy product.

That’s according to a report from The Star, which claims Reed’s performances for the youth team have led to him attracting interesting from “several” clubs in the fifth tier of English football.

It is said the Owls have now “received numerous enquiries about his availability,” and the opportunity for the youngster to get more meaningful game time at a senior level under his belt is seen as a big positive for all parties.

No clubs are named at this stage, but it is suggested Sheffield Wednesday would be eager to let Reed go out and show what he can do as he looks to continue his push for a spot in Danny Rohl’s first-team squad.

Loan move could be make or break for Sam Reed

This would be a huge stepping stone for Sam Reed, and would be the kind of move that would benefit everyone involved.

For the player, once described as ‘brilliant’ and ‘aggressive’ by The Telegraph, the chance to get out there and rack up regular minutes is crucial at this stage of his career, and it would largely determine which way his career goes from here on out.

If Reed can impress down in the National League, there’s no reason he can’t follow in Gabriel Otegbayo’s footsteps and make his way into the fringes of the Sheffield Wednesday squad next season.

However, one would assume that, if the loan move doesn’t go to plan for Reed, he may have reached the end of the line with his boyhood club.

Sam Reed described his situation as a ‘dream come true’ and outlined his ambitions to make it at Sheffield Wednesday, and Danny Rohl has highlighted the defender as a potential first-team player for the future.

But, at 21-years-old, it’s pretty much now or never for Reed. Let’s hope he takes any opportunity that comes his way and grabs it with both hands.
