Sheffield Wednesday fans will be fuming at this latest announcement.

Despite their team’s struggles both on and off the pitch this season, Sheffield Wednesday fans have been out in full force.

Particularly away from home, Sheffield Wednesday fans have earned praise for their turnouts this season, with Leicester City fans especially impressed with the Owls’ faithful during the Foxes’ 2-0 win at the King Power last month.

But for an upcoming Championship clash vs Middlesbrough on April 1st, Sheffield Wednesday fans have been given what feels like a smaller allocation than usual.

Sheffield Wednesday announce Middlesbrough ticket allocation

Sheffield Wednesday announced this afternoon that tickets for the upcoming game at the Riverside are now on sale, but that away fans have been given an allocation of 2,058 for the trip to the north-east.

It doesn’t seem like a tiny number, but bear in mind that Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium has a capacity more than 33,000.

What’s more frustrating is that, last season, Middlesbrough’s north-east neighbours Sunderland were given an allocation of 2,575; almost 500 more that what Sheffield Wednesday fans have been given, albeit for a more local team.

Sheffield Wednesday fans among best away supporters in the Championship

A study earlier this season revealed that Sheffield Wednesday boast the 7th-best away following of all teams in the Championship.

The study also revealed that Sheffield Wednesday have an average away following of 2,234, in a season where the Owls have long haul trips for games against the likes of Southampton and Plymouth Argyle, compared to what is little over a two hour drive from Hillsborough to the Riverside.

Danny Rohl loves the Owls faithful

Perhaps and under-spoken factor behind the upturn in form at Sheffield Wednesday is the unwavering support that fans have shown.

They’ve really warmed to Danny Rohl and vice-versa; Rohl often speaks of his admiration for the Wednesday supporters and his celebrations with them after wins shows the strong connection they’ve built.

And Sheffield Wednesday would no doubt have taken a sold out, or close-to sold out following to Middlesbrough, which the aforementioned numbers prove.

So why Middlesbrough have given the Owls what seems like a lesser-than-usual allocation remains to be seen.

Middlesbrough, after three-straight wins, are back on the the play-off march and sitting just five points outside the top six with nine games left to play.

Sheffield Wednesday meanwhile are still in 23rd, but a win against Ipswich Town this weekend could lift them as high as 17th.

There’ll surely be a reason for Sheffield Wednesday’s Middlesbrough allocation, but what that reason is, or whether there’s more tickets set to be released, remains to be seen.
