As many expected, Sheffield Wednesday lost away at Leicester City tonight.
But the scoreline maybe flattered the Foxes slightly, with the Owls having more than their fair share of possession in the second half and even having a few chances to get back in the game.
There were some impressive moments in the game for Danny Rohl‘s side who once again have plenty of positives to take from their performance.
But the gap to safety remains at five points and Sheffield Wednesday will have to watch on as both Huddersfield Town and QPR play tomorrow night.
Sheffield Wednesday fans catch the eye with Jamie Vardy chants
As well as a handful of positives from the game, Sheffield Wednesday also caught the eye early on, with fans chanting Jamie Vardy’s name.
The Sheffield-born striker and boyhood Wednesday fan came into the XI for just the second time since the two teams met back in November, having missed several weeks through injury.
But the 37-year-old former Stocksbridge Park Steels forward looked in good knick tonight; scoring an impressive second and putting in plenty of running before coming off in the 80th minute.
Sheffield Wednesday fans were heard loudly chanting about the Premier League winner in the first half, with The Athletic’s Leicester City reporter Rob Tanner having this to say:
Too late for emotional Vardy transfer
Fans have long pondered a potential Wednesday move for Vardy.
He’s never denied his support for the club that let him go as a youth player, but at 37 years old and with Leicester City going one way and Sheffield Wednesday another, it seems like an emotional Hillsborough move may be out of the question.
Vardy is out of contract in the summer and if he can continue scoring goals for Leicester City, he might be given a final year in the Premier League which certainly seems to be where the Foxes are headed.
If not, Vardy will have no shortage of Championship clubs or foreign teams willing to give him at least another year, so Sheffield Wednesday may have to ensure their second tier status to stand a chance of bringing in Vardy as a free agent in the summer.
And that’s even if the club wants to, and if Vardy would be open to joining the club despite all the off-field noise.
On top of that, relegation still remains the likelihood for the Owls this season, unless Rohl and co can pull off a great escape in what is now the final 14 games of the season.
