Sheffield Wednesday were left utterly heartbroken after a trip to Watford in the Championship.

The Owls were on course for a maiden win in the league since September, when Charlie McNeill continued his good form by scoring in the 17th minute.

Wednesday defended resolutely and managed to hold out until the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time when Vivaldo Semedo fired home via a Pierce Charles deflection.

There was some less-than-positive news on the injury front, though, with Barry Bannan being substituted at half-time with a fitness issue.

Henrik Pedersen shares Barry Bannan update

It’s far from ideal that Wednesday lost their talismanic captain at the halfway stage of the match, but the team very nearly held on for a big three points without him.

Bannan was apparently struggling with his groin, and Pedersen was somewhat coy and shared how the Owls captain was feeling.

He told the Sheffield Star: “He couldn’t play in the second half because his groin was too tight. Let’s see tomorrow what the situation is. I don’t know right now.”

Wednesday need Bannan back as soon as possible

Bannan is now 36, and he’s been a real Wednesday stalwart over the years, playing for the Owls for close to 10 years.

The player is going to be sorely missed if he’s out of the team for any period of time, and the captain is badly needed on the Wednesday team.

With a young and inexperienced squad at Pedersen’s disposal, the head coach needs his captain fit and firing and hopefully, he can be fit to play next time out.

Bannan’s future will come into discussion in the summer, and it remains to be seen whether or not the skipper will remain at the club to try and fire the club out of League One.
