Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has hinted that he might pick Marvin Johnson against Millwall this weekend. The left-sided player made his first appearance of the season last week at Bristol City.
It’s been a frustrating time of things for Johnson since the Wembley play-off final. He was very impressive on that baking hot day in North London but shortly after pre-season started, he was training on his own.
Xisco Munoz simply didn’t fancy the 32-year-old and he was forced out of the Wednesday reckoning. Since Rohl checked in at Hillsborough, he’s been allowed back into the fold and a start could now be on the cards.
Rohl suggests he might pick Johnson this weekend
This would represent a remarkable turnaround in the player’s fortunes. Johnson must have feared for his Wednesday future when he couldn’t even get a look in during training under Munoz.
Now, Rohl has been discussing the player. Ahead of this weekend’s huge home game against Millwall, the gaffer has hinted at a starting berth for Johnson.
He told The Star: “All the players (substitutes) had a good impact at Bristol City and they were immediately in the game and it was important to see the reaction and be strong enough as a group.
“Marvin had some good action in his minutes, which I liked and it’s also about the training. It was good to get some new impressions about players and then it’s about making the decision on Friday after training.”
Johnson has big Wednesday role to play
It would be a stretch to say that by giving more minutes to Johnson, Wednesday would definitely survive relegation. However, the player did get 14 assists last season and that shouldn’t go unnoticed.
Johnson is a player who gives his all every time he pulls on the blue and white shirt. He deserves credit for the way he’s conducted himself at Hillsborough and as a left-footer, he would bring balance to the team.
Whether he gets the nod to play from the off this weekend is in the hands of Rohl now. The comments from the manager certainly sound positive, however, and from a fan perspective, it would be good to see Johnson getting another chance.
