Sheffield Wednesday head coach Danny Rohl has thrown striker Lee Gregory a Hillsborough lifeline.
The 35-year-old hasn’t been named in the Owls squad for the last three games in the Championship.
With Wednesday struggling for goals it has seemed a somewhat strange decision and now Rohl has been quizzed on the player.
Gregory was influential as Wednesday won promotion last season. He scored several key goals and also netted in the famous win over Peterborough.
Now, he’s facing a fight for his future at Hillsborough. This is a shame and despite Gregory’s advancing years, he’s still a capable striker.
Rohl discusses Gregory situation at Wednesday
Wednesday tied the talisman to a one-year contract at the end of the promotion-winning campaign of last season.
He featured heavily under Xisco Munoz but under Rohl just recently he’s been bizarrely dropped from the squad.
Rohl has found time to praise Gregory though and it would appear there is still a chance for him at Wednesday.
He was quizzed on the striker after the game and he gave an answer that will give Gregory some motivation.
He told The Star: “The door is still open and he is a player for us. I support him. But for sure there is always a battle to be in the squad. He is a good human, I like him. He is honest and he works hard in training.
“Let’s see what we have to do on Saturday, we spoke about fresh legs coming into the squad again. Maybe he can show he’s ready. This is important.”
Gregory deserves squad place
Wednesday have scored just nine goals in the Championship this season, so leaving a striker out of the squad makes little sense.
That said, it was one of Rohl’s subs who made the difference against Leicester last night.
Jeff Hendrick stepped off the bench to secure an unlikely point against the Championship leaders.
Gregory hasn’t really done anything to warrant being dropped completely by Wednesday though and he can score goals at this level.
Hopefully, these comments can bode well and Gregory can feature on Saturday.
Wednesday face Blackburn on Saturday and they’re in pretty good form themselves.
Although the Owls got themselves a decent point last night, there were a number of defensive players on the bench again.
Gregory can provide some know-how in front of goal and the Wednesday faithful will be hoping to see him back soon.
