Sheffield Wednesday have now picked up the title of the worst at one thing in the Championship.
Sheffield Wednesday have endured a turbulent campaign which is set to come to a dramatic ending next month.
The Owls currently sit two points from safety and have six games remaining to climb out of the relegation zone.
They previously looked on course to rescue their Championship status after picking up five wins in six games, however they have only managed one point in the last month.
Danny Rohl has certainly massively improved Wednesday’s chances of staying up and they have looked much better at both ends of the pitch, however it could still be their failure to put the ball in the back of the net that could cost them.
The worst in the Championship
Sheffield Wednesday became the Championship’s lowest scorers on Easter Monday with only 31 goals, while they were overtaken by Rotherham United (32) after they claimed a 2-1 win over Millwall.
Their recent dip in form has seen them score only one goal in their last four games, while they only managed to net one goal in both of their previous two wins against Rotherham and Plymouth.
The Owls have failed to score on 21 occasions this season and have only scored more than two goals in a game once – against Blackburn Rovers.
It is clearly a huge issue for Rohl to solve in a very short space of time, it could well send them down to League One if they can’t find some goals in the final weeks of the campaign.
Sheffield Wednesday scored 33 goals when they were relegated three years ago and should beat that, though they may fail to match 09/10’s tally of 43 goals and 02/03’s record of 40 goals.
The Owls have also already conceded 64 goals, which is more than they conceded during their last relegation (61), but less than 09/10 so far (69) and 02/03 (73).
Does this mean Sheffield Wednesday are doomed?
They do still have six games to play though, so could quite easily have worse goalscoring and conceding records than in all three of their previous relegations.
It is a huge concern for Danny Rohl, who really deserves something to celebrate at the end of this season – as do the supporters.
While Ike Ugbo hasn’t scored in his last five games, it would have been interesting to see where they would be in the league table if he had been at Hillsborough all season. He could well have provided them with the goals they were really lacking.
The German coach may have to turn to the experience of strikers such as Michael Smith and Lee Gregory to help him out though, because what they are currently doing really isn’t working.
