Ike Ugbo has been the subject of more heavy praise after scoring Sheffield Wednesday’s only goal at the weekend.
Sheffield Wednesday still sit three points from safety, however a narrow victory over Rotherham United has kept them in the race to avoid relegation this season.
The Owls racked up 17 shots against their local rivals, but had looked on course for a 0-0 stalemate on the hour mark.
However, the man who has changed everything for the club recently popped up with his sixth goal in five games to gift Sheffield Wednesday a vital three points.
Ike Ugbo is now their top goalscorer in the Championship, despite playing 24 games less than second place Anthony Musaba.
The striker’s goals alone has now racked them up nine points in total and has put them in real contention to avoid the drop zone.
Ugbo has been praised regularly since netting his first brace against Birmingham City last month, while journalist Joe Crann has now claimed he has become ‘more of an asset than many expected’.
Crann wrote on X: “Despite playing just eight games for #SWFC, Iké Ugbo is now the club’s outright top goalscorer for this season with six goals… Wednesday needed goals when they signed him, and boy has he delivered. His all-round play is just great, though. More of an asset than many expected.”
Can Sheffield Wednesday sign Ike Ugbo permanently?
There wasn’t a great deal of excitement when Sheffield Wednesday signed Ike Ugbo, having ended his loan spell at Cardiff City early after netting four goals in 22 games.
However, the forward has very quickly become a hero at Hillsborough and could well be the driving force that keeps them in the Championship.
Ugbo is full of confidence right now and just seems to be in the right place at the right time when you really need him to be.
The Canadian will still have two years left on his contract with Troyes this summer, but it certainly shouldn’t put the Owls off trying to sign him permanently.
If they can stay up, then there is surely no reason why Ugbo wouldn’t want to stay at the club.
If him and Danny Rohl can both have a full pre-season at the club, then who knows what magic they could create next season.
Though avoiding relegation is the most important task right now, because fail that and everything could come crumbling down very quickly.
