One Sheffield Wednesday star has been told he ‘remains a big part of things’ despite a difficult campaign.
Sheffield Wednesday brought in 12 new signings in the summer as they prepared for their return to the Championship.
Arguably only a few of them have been a success though, with Di’Shon Bernard the best of the lot, while Pol Valentin and Anthony Musaba have spent a majority of the campaign in the starting line-up.
However, seven-figure signing Djeidi Gassama has managed only two goals this term, while the likes of Reece James, Bambo Diaby and Ashley Fletcher have really struggled for game-time.
While Sheffield Wednesday could try to turn the loan moves of Ike Ugbo and Ian Poveda into permanent deals this summer if they stay up, one loanee whose future remains in doubt is Momo Diaby – despite being the easiest to keep at the club.
Momo Diaby joined the Owls on loan from Portimonense last summer and managed an hour against Preston North End at the start of the season, before suffering a foot injury that kept him out of action for four months.
The 27-year-old made his comeback on New Year’s Day, but has only made one start since, while he has been an unused substitute on four occasions.
Diaby is the one player’s deal that does include an option-to-buy, though Danny Rohl is so far yet to indicate whether the club will take up that option.
Despite failing to impress so far, The Star have claimed that Diaby ‘remains a big part of things’ at Hillsborough, suggesting he could potentially be offered the chance to stay beyond the summer.
Will Momo Diaby stay at Sheffield Wednesday this summer?
It doesn’t come as much of a surprise that the Frenchman is still in Danny Rohl’s plans though, given their lack of depth in midfield.
Sheffield Wednesday currently only have Diaby, Will Vaulks, Barry Bannan and Jeff Hendrick at the club, however the Owls captain has recently picked up an injury, while the latter is unlikely to play another game for his loan club this term.
Bannan’s absence should definitely give Diaby a chance to pick up some vital minutes and made a positive impact on the squad, with the midfielder highly likely to take his place in the starting line-up until he returns.
It is a pivotal part of the campaign for the Yorkshire outfit and Diaby could well earn himself a permanent move in the summer if he wants it.
A majority of Wednesday’s midfielders are already out of contract at the end of the season, so keeping hold of Diaby may be a safe option for their German manager.
