According to a report by The Athletic, Celtic want to sign Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Liam Shaw at the end of the season when his contract is up.
Shaw is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal at Hillsborough, meaning that he will be free to leave the club in the summer, and as you can imagine, he’s had eyes on him.
Shaw has certainly been one of Wednesday’s standout performers in what has been a rather drab season for the Yorkshire outfit.
Unfortunately, it seems as though the teenager could be headed north of the border sooner rather than later.
The worst part about this is that Wednesday would receive a minimal compensation fee if he joined a Scottish club compared to the windfall they’d receive if he stayed within England.
Andy Holdsworth’s comments on him best show what Wednesday would be missing out on if Shaw was allowed to leave the club.
“He’s aggressive in everything he does. He knows how to play and is a good lad. He wants to work, learn and listen all the time to get better,” Holdsworth said.
Fortunately, Wednesday are in negotiations with Shaw over a new deal, but it remains to be seen whether or not he will agree to an extension, and Celtic’s interest being made public certainly puts the cat amongst the pigeons.
One thing that does bode well for Wednesday is that Shaw is a lifelong fan of the club, so you wouldn’t imagine he’d be keen to ditch them at the first available opportunity.
We can only wait and see what Shaw does, but we’re sure that every Wednesday fan is hoping that he stays at the Owls beyond this season.
